Mini lights aren't just for the Christmas season any longer. These versatile lights come in a ton of different colors, spacing and wiring colors. Take advantage of their versatility and the fact that they won't set you back much of your decorating budget and you'll be sure to add some sparkle to your home.

Here are 10 of my top ideas for using mini lights in and around your home. (Make sure any lights that you use outside are rated for outdoor use and connect to a GFCI outlet.)

1. Wrap the trunks of any trees or plants inside or out.

2. Use LED mini lights to set up a reading nook or accent the lower bunk of a set of bunk beds. (LED lights don't heat up so they'll be safer.)

3. Write a message on a wall with push pins and hang a set of lights over and around them (don't push the pins through the wire.)

4. Fill a wide glass urn with some clear sets and replace your dirty fireplace grate with something that will light up your hearth.

5. Echo the color scheme of your child's rooms with mini lights outlining their windows.

6. Fill a glass brick with a shorter - 35 -50 bulb set - wrapped in organza (or not!) and use it to decorate a shelf or book case.

7. Fill a wine bottle with twinkle lights and accent your next buffet table.

8. Use LED mini ice or M5 or razzberry sets to light up that area on top of your kitchen cabinets. (LED mini lights are great because they don't heat up and they'll last longer!)

9. Use dynamic or chasing colored mini lights and some foam poster board or a cardboard box - poke holes and insert lights - it's a campy Science Fiction computer panel! Great for geeky parties!

10. Wrap clear sets on white wire wrapped in tulle to accent a wedding guest book or gift table.

So head to the attic and pull down those Christmas lights, or surf the web and find some to purchase in July. These little accessories are an inexpensive and versatile way to brighten up your home.

The Beauty of Self Leveling Concrete

Self leveling concrete is an amazing product. The beauty of self leverers is that you can control the height of your floor. They can also be stained and sealed. Mapei makes a self leveling product that can level smooth as glass with almost zero shrinkage. Other companies are working on similar products.

During the past week I filmed the installation of Mapei self leveling concrete in a new restaurant. It was the only flooring solution that would work.

One of the issues was that there was little thought about the floor until late in the project. This happens a lot. Flooring should be the first consideration in every project then design and build from there, not the other way around.

All the moldings were already in and painted. Tile had been installed in the kitchen leaving a height issue where it meets the main floor. Entrance door had been installed leaving little height for flooring below the door. All the doorways had a height issue at the transition.

The self leveling concrete solved all the height issues. The self leveler was poured thin, slightly more than 1/4 inch. A guage rake is used to pull the concrete to the exact height. The guage rake has feet that can be adjusted to the exact height you need.

It's amazing to watch. The self leveling concrete is very wet and flows to an even flat surface. Then a "Smoother" is used to flatten out even more. The Smoother is a tool that has flat edge on a pole that is pulled over the surface.

The floor looked awesome when complete. It took 3 people about 90 minutes to resurface 1200 square feet. When complete you could see a perfect transition at all the doorways, entrance door could swing open freely, transition to tile in kitchen was perfect.

The next day dark brown Acetone concrete dyes were sprayed randomly on the floor. Then a diluted brown concrete acid stain was sprayed over the entire floor and left on for 1 hour. Then they rinsed the acid stain to stop the chemical reaction with the concrete and to remove any residue.

The final step in the coloring process was application of diluted brown water based concrete dyes over the entire floor. The process was a combination of spraying then evening out the dye with a thick microfiber mop.

The next day the self leveling concrete was sealed with 2 coats of a solvent based concrete sealer.

The last step which brought it all together was application of a high solids floor finish. Once the second coat was applied the floor came alive.

The final result was a highly functional, decorative, low maintenance floor. One very unique feature is the importance of wall color and lighting. The floor picked up reds from the awning outside. Copper panels reflected a copper color onto the floor. This is a feature that is not achieved from other flooring products and is critical when working with decorative concrete.

There were imperfections as with all decorative concrete floors. But generally the floor was a thing of beauty. Any imperfections would not be evident since 80% over the floor would be covered with tables and chairs.

A Backyard Fire Pit - Do It Yourself Today

If you've been looking at buying a fire pit, then you're probably already aware that you can buy ready-made models that only require some simple assembly. But wouldn't it be nice to create your own fire pit? One that's uniquely yours? You can also choose to buy a basic fire pit, which will generally include the basics such as a cover, log grill and spark screen, and then build a brick or stone wall around that. This will help stop pets or children from running into the fire pit by accident.

For a gas fire pit, you will need to buy either gas fire logs or a simple metal fire ring. Then you simply need to design and build the housing.

The garage or workshop is a sacred place. Here is where we store all our precious tools. It is a refuge from an angry spouse where we can cool off from a heated argument and a place to spend unforgettable quality time working on projects with our children. Unfortunately the old adage our shop teachers preached, "a place for everything, and everything in its place" often falls by the wayside in our own shops. Getting things in order is a valuable investment that will save you countless hours of time and money by making your workshop a more enjoyable and efficient environment.

Store similar tools in a toolbox or hang them from metal hangers on a peg board. Find a cupboard or shelf for larger tools. Using labels, tracing the tools picture on the wall, or taping a photo of cabinet contents to cabinet doors can help you find things quickly. Allow for adequate space for items. These systems operate from a single vacuum and will filter dust out of the air and can be connected to multiple machines.

Whatever work you are doing always have a special place for safety gear such as ear muffs and eye goggles. This way you will be more likely to use them when you should. Eye injuries can be life changing matters that unfortunately happen all too often though easily preventable.

TV Bracket Choices for Hanging Your TV

There is nothing worse than buying the best quality TV set and not having a good location in your home for it. Firstly, you have to find a good location for your LCD TV. The Flat Panel TV was designed to be mounted on a wall for optimum viewing pleasure. They give the semblance of a theater environment in the warmth and comfort of your home. Prior to the advent of mounted TV screens and TV brackets, the wall was used for book shelves, paintings, mirrors and clocks. With the introduction of Flat Panel TVs, wall brackets became a vital accessory for hanging the elegant TV flat panel screen. The availability of appropriate LCD brackets is not an issue since all types of TV brackets have been developed to handle the different sizes and weights of the television screens. In addition, different features have been embedded into the TV wall mounts to make it easier to locate the TV in just about any place on the wall, on the ceiling and even under cabinets. There are different TV brackets to handle the various degrees of tilt and swivel. Some TV brackets provide five degrees of tilt angle while others can reach thirty or more degrees of tilt angle. In the case of swivel facilities, TV mounts can swivel from ten to ninety degrees. Manufacturers are constantly improving the features of TV wall brackets to facilitate hanging the TV screen in any part of the house. They also consider the design of the TV wall mounts so it can blend with the ambiance and atmosphere of the home, and not stick out like a sore thumb.

TV wall brackets are made to handle different sizes and weight of TV screens. Manufacturers can give assurances that a wall mount will not break or crack under the weight and size of a TV screen, provided the correct TV wall brackets are used. However, they cannot claim the same assurances on the wall that the TV brackets are attached to. As such, they recommend that you attach the TV wall mounts on strong supports like studs. Avoid bolting the TV wall mount to a wooden wall without any stud behind the wall to provide a firm hold and added support. This appears to be the only limitation at the moment. So when you choose the ideal location for the TV flat panel, be sure there are studs behind the wooden wall. A cement or brick wall does not have the same limitations as a wooden wall. A TV wall mount can be anchored firmly to the cement wall. Just be sure the holes are not near each other because they could weaken the hold of the cement on the anchors.

TV wall brackets also have accessories such as cable and wire boxes that can be put below the TV mounts. These boxes help keep the cables and wires neatly and securely in place. When you run the wires across the wall, use wire covers to maintain a clean and aesthetic appearance. You can even color the wire covers so it blends with the colors of the wall and does not look like an eye sore. When hanging TV screens above a fireplace, be sure the screen and wires are far away so they don't get affected by the heat from the fireplace. Installing the correct TV bracket in the right location will ensure your television will be properly positioned for the best viewing experience.

30 Ways to Display Art and Photos

It's so easy these days to simply grab a camera or cell phone and snap a picture of whatever catches your eye. You may have thousands of photos just lying around. And that doesn't count all of your other artwork like paintings and prints. So what is a person to do with all of these treasures that could never be parted with? There are many creative ways to hang and display art, and this article is full of such ideas. It will be hard to pick just a few!

The general rule of thumb for hanging objects on the wall is to hang them at eye level. They will simply be more pleasing to look at if you don't have to look way up or down to see them. If you are hanging pieces in a group, think of all of them as one big picture. In these cases it may be easier to cut out scraps of paper the same size as your art and position them on the floor before actually going for the hammer. (Incidentally, odd numbered groupings always look the best.) Another important consideration is size - make sure the scale of your art matches the size of the wall and furniture. Lastly you will want to consider lighting. While objects and pictures do not need to be spotlighted, often times the art will be even more appealing if you focus a beam of light on it. Now that we have the basics of hanging art pieces we can talk about ways to arrange them. Here are some ideas:

Ways to Arrange Your Art on the Wall:

1. Hang several pictures in a row, either horizontally or vertically. You could have just three or as many as you need to fill up your wall. It's a good way to keep your eyes moving around the room, too.

2. You can also offset them. Take two or more pictures and hang one. Then step the other one down by a few inches. It is sort of like hanging them on a diagonal.

3. Place four similarly shaped objects in a square to create a box shape. If you have six or more you could always do a rectangle.

4. Try placing art in a collage on your wall. Find several different objects such as paintings, photos, and architectural art and mix them up in a pleasing way. Keep them fairly close together and remember the rule of three.

5. Hang photos above a staircase. Echo the shape of your stairs by staggering the items up the wall like a set of steps.

6. Arrange your art in themes. If you have a bunch of botanicals, group them all together instead of placing them separately in different parts of your home.

7. Frame your ordinary pictures in a unique way. For example, you could use silk flowers or evergreen garland to surround the piece. Simply glue them to the existing frame and hang.

8. Hang photos or pictures from ribbon or wire. You could even hang multiples together the same way by hanging a rod on the wall and stringing the photos from it on ribbon.

9. Arrange art around a doorway or window. Start at the bottom and go up one side, over the top, and down the other. The pieces should be small and not too busy if you do this.

10. Group pictures together in a collage or one of the other suggested shapes. Then take a piece of molding and build a frame big enough to surround the whole group and hang it on the wall around the pieces. Or you could just use paint and create a faux frame on the wall.

11. Do you have a landscape picture of the beach or countryside? Consider buying some inexpensive plastic shutters and putting them on either side of the item for a window effect.

12. Look through every room in your house and see where you might be able to sit some pictures. Tops of cabinets and dressers work well, as do desks, the top of your TV, or even near the jacuzzi in the master bathroom.

13. Do you have a space between your kitchen cabinets and the ceiling? This is a perfect spot to display some small art.

14. Got a fireplace? Try putting some photos or paintings on the mantle - don't hang them above, just sit them on top. Enhance the photo with a couple of well-chosen accessories.

15. If you have a curio cabinet that is not really being used for curios, you can always put art inside instead.

16. Do you own a piano? The top of an upright, or even a grand piano, is a great place for art items.

17. If your piece of art is relatively large, try sitting it on the floor. Lean it against a wall out of the way of kids, pets, and heavy traffic and watch the smiles you are sure to get.

18. Hang up a shelf, set your pictures on top and lean them against the wall. It is a nice change from hanging them by a nail.

19. If your décor will allow, put up some chair rail picture molding. Like regular chair rails, this is installed at around three feet from the ground and is basically a very small shelf that circles your room. Lean art and photos up against the wall and let your treasures surround you.

20. If you are simply looking for a unique way to display your photos on a table, try a vignette. For example, gather three portrait photos, a couple of your favorite landscape paintings, a tall candlestick and some greenery and arrange them on the tabletop. It will make them seem more important if you group the items together.

21. Hang three or four large pictures in a square or rectangle above your bed for an instant and unique headboard.

22. If the artwork is weather-resistant or can be made to withstand the elements, try hanging a piece or two outside. The front door makes a bold statement when adorned with a favorite piece of art.

23. Do you have one of those bath and shower combos that don't quite reach to the ceiling? If you have a picture that can withstand the steam and heat of the shower (behind glass or enclosed in a metal frame for example), hang it in this blank area to add interest.

24. Another idea for those heat and steam resistant pieces is to hang them above the stove as a backsplash. Just be sure you can wipe them clean.

25. If you have one of those big sterile bathroom mirrors you can always hang a photo in front of it to make it more appealing. Take a piece that will match the décor in your bath, find a complementary ribbon, and hang it in the center of the mirror (from the wall above). This will add interest while still leaving plenty of mirror to use.

26. Take three large pieces of wood, hinge them together accordion style, cover them with fabric, and use them as a room divider screen. Hang photos, pictures and all kinds of other art on your "new wall".

27. Using the same idea, construct a small screen for in front of your fireplace. It is a great spot to hang seasonal art for the summer when the fireplace is not in use. Just be careful to use flame retardant materials near working fireplaces.

28. Create a coffee table to display your photos. Purchase a table that fits with your décor, or use the one you already have, and get a piece of glass cut to the size of the table top. Arrange your photos on the table, then lay the glass on top for a unique, useful and waterproof art gallery.

29. If you have a picture or painting that is around 16 by 20 inches, make it into a side table. Attach the art to a piece of wood cut to the same size, then add legs you can buy at any home improvement store. Paint if you wish. Make sure you have the top covered in glass or Plexiglas, and you have an instant side table.

30. Create a shelf out of art. Take a piece of art or a special photo and get a flat frame to put it in. Nail a small piece of wood that is the same width as the frame and a couple of inches deep to the bottom. Paint it the same color as the frame, hang the photo on your wall, and you are ready to accessorize with a small bud vase, miniature collectables, or even spices in the kitchen.

Bathrooms come in many sizes and many layouts, and every bathroom is primarily a working space. Having the things you need at your fingertips and a place to store spares are essential to designing a workable bathroom. Types of Room Dividers for Various Budgets

A room divider can be just a screen or provide storage. Starting at the low budget end, IKEA has a selection of both for well under 100.00 - a lovely three-part folding screen or an open shelf system for books or display items. These would be ideal solutions to create a small office area or a "secret" storage for children's toys.

For larger areas, hanging curtains or blinds from the ceiling is fairly inexpensive and should be within the capabilities of most of us - and they can be easily opened when the rooms are to become one. The cost of this type of room divider can be minimal or, depending on materials and labour, could be hundreds of pounds.

If a large room is to be divided on a more permanent basis without building a dividing wall, consideration should be given to the desired benefits. Access, light, heat and noise may all be factors. For example:

does one half of the room use a light or heat source from the other half? do you need to reduce noise between the two sections? check with your local council about the access to a bedroom through another room.

Bifolding doors form a wall when closed but can be fully opened to either one or both sides, stacking to the side of the opening.

Bi-folds are available in DIY stores but can be purchased from specialist companies who will make them to fit your requirements and install them for you (recommended for wider, multi-folding door widths). Glazing options can often be specified as Georgian or leaded-light to complement your existing dcor. Your budget may have to stretch from hundreds to thousands for this solution.

The ultimate in room dividers, however, must be frameless glass door room dividers. Similar to bi folding doors for installation and, when open, they stack against a side wall for maximum access between rooms. Opening and closing frameless glass partitions works differently because the doors are not hinged together (they can't be, there are no side frames to enable hinges to be attached). The main door opens just like a door between any two rooms. To open some or all of the partition, each of the other doors slides along discrete top and bottom rails towards the first door where they can then pivot and stack against it.

Because the glass is frameless, made of single thickness, toughened, tempered, 'unbreakable' glass, the stacking width is less than probably any other door available, enabling maximum access through the opened area. Reverse the process and lock each door into place to re-divide the room.

When the frameless glass doors are fully closed, there is no visual interruption or perceptible loss of light (unless you choose tinted glass) yet draughts and noise are reduced. The absence of frames means that this type of room divider can be fitted comfortably in any environment, from period homes to state-of-the-art futuristic designs.

Available since 2009 for domestic dwellings at an affordable price (comparable with good quality bifolds), frameless glass was previously seen only in commercial buildings and medieval castles open to the public. Made to measure, delivered and fitted within a few weeks from around 3,500 for smaller rooms, why would you choose anything else? You and your home deserve the best.
